夜になると葉が閉じる「ねむの木」の習性

　写真は亡父が植えた初代の「ねむの木」の孫の代に当ります。数年前に庭に生えた小さな苗をお稲荷様を覆うように私が植えました。今ではかなり成長し、樹形も良いです。それにしても、夜になると葉が閉じる習性は不思議です。

　小さな葉が軸を中心に左右に対になっており、夜になると閉じ、朝になると開きます。写真は早朝に撮ったので先の方は未だ閉じてます。花は極楽浄土を思わせるもので夏至の頃に咲きます。誠に風流な植物といえます。

 The photo is the grandchild of the first "Nemu no Ki" that means silk tree planted by my late father. I planted a small seedling that grew in the garden a few years ago to cover Inari shrine. Now it has grown considerably and the shape has improved. Even so, the habit of the leaves closing at night is strange.

 The small leaves are paired to the left and right around the axis, closing at night and opening in the morning. I took the picture early in the morning, so the tip is still closed. The flower is reminiscent of paradise and bloom around the summer solstice. I will upload a photo when it blooms. The word "Elegance" suits this plant.
