レース鳩月刊誌・エリザベス女王の思い出

　午前2時過ぎ、NHKはエリザベス女王逝去のニュースを伝え、私は耳を疑いました。生涯で日本を含め100か国以上を訪問され、難しい時代にあって世界の多くの人々と触れ合い、並外れた気品と世界平和に貢献された９６才の生涯でした。

　平和を愛するエリザベス女王は幼き日より生涯を通じて、鳩を飼育し続けられました。右端の写真は８０年ほど前のもので、前列左がエリザベス女王で、右が妹のマーガレット・ローズ、後列右がご両親、後方に当時の鳩舎が見えます。

　私も小学４年から半世紀にわたり鳩を飼育し続けましたが、一人暮らしのため近年、鳩飼育を断念しました。

　一方、英語に興味がある私は「英語を勉強するには何が効果的か」と考えた末、それは「興味ある分野を題材にすること」に気づき、以来、イギリスから月刊誌「ピクトリアル」を長い期間、購読してました。

　そしてついに、世界で読まれてる「ピクトリアル」に日本人で初めて表紙に登場できました。左がその表紙です。中央は近年のエリザベス女王です。安らかにお眠りください。

Dear my friends and pigeon fanciers abroad

　After 2:00 a.m. today, NHK which is the leading broadcast in Japan reported the news of Queen Elizabeth's passing, and I couldn't believe my ears. During her lifetime, she visited more than 100 countries, including Japan, met many people from all over the world in difficult times, and contributed to world peace with her extraordinary dignity.

　Her peace-loving Queen Elizabeth kept pigeons all her life since her infancy. The photo on the far right was taken about 80 years ago, with Queen Elizabeth on the left in the front row, her sister Margaret Rose on the right, her parents on the right in the back row, and the pigeon loft of that time in the back.

　I have been raising pigeons for half a century since I was in the 4th grade of elementary school, but in recent years I have given up on raising pigeons because I live alone.

　On the other hand, I am interested in English, so after thinking about "What is the most effective way to study English", I realized that I should use the studying materials that interest me. Since then, I have continued to subscribe to Pictorial, a monthly racing pigeon magazine from England for a long time.

　And finally, I became the first Japanese to appear on the cover of "Pictorial", which is read around the world. That's the cover on the left. In the center is the recent Queen Elizabeth. May she rest in peace.
