特徴ある 星座はオリオン 赤道上

　今宵は月明かりが強いので、ちょっと見難いですが、南の空に「オリオン座」見えます。星座の中では特徴ある形をしており、子供の頃から「北斗七星」と共に覚えました。それにしてもユニークな形で不思議です。

　若き日、カルカッタ交響楽団演奏会の帰りに、よく眺めつつ帰路に着きました。この演奏会の観客で日本人はいつも私一人でした。オリオン座を北緯22度で見るとやはり頭上近く見えます。

　左上の一等星はベテルギュースです。また、中央に３つ星が並んでます。最も右の星の名はミンタカと言い、この星の真下が赤道です。三つ星を左下へ延長していくと全天で最も明るい一等星「シリウス」です。

　１月１日午前０時に真南にあったシリウスですが、今日は１月５日なので、午前０時に見ると真南より少々西に移動するでしょう。それは私たちを載せてる地球が反時計回りに公転してる証拠です。

　Sirius was due south at midnight on January 1st, but today is January 5th, so if we look at it at midnight, it will move slightly west than due south. It is evidence that the earth revolves counterclockwise.
