中一にとって 英語は楽しみか 苦しみか

　私が子供の頃の昔、家の鍵と言えば中から閉めるものでしたが、その後、「鍵っ子」という言葉が生まれ、現在、どの家でも鍵は外からも閉められることが当たり前になってます。

　昨日、午後４時頃、隣に住む中1の女の子が私の家を訪ね、鍵がないので家に入れませんとのことでした。彼女曰く、丁度良い機会なので「カッキーに英語の宿題を見てもらいたいです。」とのことでした。このため、私の家の畳の部屋で炬燵に当たりながら、彼女はプリントの宿題を始めました。

　改めて感じましたが、英語には一人称、二人称、三人称があり、その主格、所有格、目的格があり、それに伴ってBe動詞や一般動詞が時制に伴って変化し、その文章の疑問形も存在します。しかし、三人称などを説明するのが私には大変難しかったです。彼女はスペルは正しく書けますが、やはり、文法は分かり難いようでした。

　このような学習を中学３年間と高校の３年間もやってたら、私だって英語嫌いになったでしょう。しかし、これをやらなければ文法的にめちゃくちゃになり、海外の人に通じないことも事実です。

　私は思いました。文法など約束事も大切ですが、同時に、英語で「自分の気持ちや考えを表現するいわば自己表現の楽しみ」も含めた学習方法が私たち日本人には大切ではないでしょうか。英語は楽しみでしょうか、苦しみでしょうか。本来は楽しみの筈です。

Dear my overseas friends who are learning foreign languages now

　When I was a child, the key of my house used to lock from the inside, but after that, the word of "Kagikko" that means latchkey child was coined, and now it's commonplace for any house to be locked from the outside in Japan.

　Yesterday, around 4:00 pm, the first grade girl in Junior high next door came to my home and told me that she couldn't enter her house because she didn't have the key. She said "It is a one in a million chance, teach me my English homework now." So she started doing her print homework while sitting on the kotatsu that means leg warmer in the tatami mat room.

　As I felt again, English grammar has personal inflection such as the first person, the second person, and the third person including tense, and furthermore there are nominative, possessive, and objective cases. However, it was very difficult for me to explain her these grammars especially the third person. She can spell correctly, but again, the grammar seemed difficult to understand for her due to entirely different from the Japanese language.

　If I studied like this for three years in junior high and three years in high school, I would have come to dislike English. However, it is also true that if we don't study this foundation, our grammar will be messed up and I won't be able to communicate with foreigners.

　"I thought." Promises such as grammar are indispensable, but at the same time, isn't it important for us Japanese to have a learning method that includes the "enjoyment of self-expression of feeling and thinking" in English? Is English a pleasure or a pain? It's supposed to be fun.
