私の祖父母は４人とも江戸時代生まれ

　「枝垂れレンギョウ」が７分咲きになり、本格的な春の到来を告げてます。長い枝が下につくほど垂れ下がり、ピアノの部屋の窓を開けると中から見えるように数年前にここに植え替えました。

　概して黄色い花は人が手を加えず自然の姿と言われます。この植物の特徴の一つは世代交代です。根元がら子供が生えてきて大きくなると、元の幹がだんだん弱り、枯れていきます。そして、いつの時代も毎年この時季にたくさんの花を咲かせます。

　あるいは私たち人間も長い目で見れば「枝垂れレンギョウ」と同様な世代交代を繰り返しているのでしょう。

　それにしても、私は、４人いる祖父母に会ったことがありません。生まれたときにはもういませんでした。４人とも江戸時代に生まれたからです。こんな悲惨な運命もあるのです。その代わり、私がひ孫に会う可能性は残されているのです。こうなれば望外の喜びで、人生は捨てたものではない。何と言っても、健康長寿だ。

　Even so, I have never met my four grandparents. They weren't in this world when I was born, because all the four were born in Edo-period. Therefore my fate is deeply tragic beyond description. In exchange, there is still the possibility that I may meet my great-grandchildren. This is an unexpected pleasure. We must not give up until passing away. No matter what I say, I need healthy longevity.
