暫くぶりに アメリカ女性と 会話する

　地元・倉賀野小の児童の安全を期して、昨日は下校時に交通パトロールをしました。多くの場合、気候は寒いか暑いかのどちらかですが、昨日は５月の陽気となり快適でした。

　信号機のあるところで、１時間３０分程二人で行ってましたが、高学年が下校する後半は私一人で、ぞろぞろ歩いて来る１００名程を指導してました。その後、４時過ぎになったら、遠くから子供にしてはちょっと大きな方が一人でこちらに向かって歩いてきました。

　何と、珍しく外国の女性です。彼女が信号待ちしてるとき、間髪入れず、私は「どちらの国から見えましたか。」と尋ねたら、「アメリカのバージニア州から来ました。」とのことで、私もアメリカの女性と話すのは暫くぶりでした。

　現役時代は４回、ホームステイとして我が家に１週間ほどアメリカ人を受け入れ、食事を共にしたり、群馬県内や軽井沢を案内したことがあります。また、草津における前高吹奏楽部の合宿に同行してもらい、演奏について感想を述べて戴いたり、部員との交流の機会を持ち、部員たちも本場の英語に接して大変有意義でした。

　昨日、信号の所で偶然お会いした女性に「お仕事は何をされてますか」との私の問いに、何と「教師をしており、倉賀野小で英語を教えてる」とのことで私は本当に驚きました。私も「２０代のときインドの日本人学校で教師をしてました」と話すと、彼女は「ちょうど同じ立場ですね」と驚いた様子でした。

Dear my overseas friends

　In order to ensure the safety of the local Kuragano Elementary School students, I did a traffic patrol on the way home from school yesterday. The climate is often either cold or hot. But, yesterday was sunny and comfortable like in May.

　At the traffic light as usual, the two of us worked for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, but in the second half when the upper grades left school, I worked alone and instructed about 100 students who were walking in droves one after another. After 4 o'clock, a tall lady came walking towards me from a distance.

　To my surprise, she was a foreign woman. When she was waiting for a traffic light, I immediately asked, "Which country do you come from?" She said, "I'm from Virginia, USA," It's been a while since I talked to an American lady.

　When I was active, I had hosted Americans in my home for a week as a homestay four times, I shared meals with her, and guided her around Gumma Prefecture and Karuizawa-town. In addition, I took her the Maebashi High School wind orchestra's training camp in Kusatsu-Spa, where she gave her impressions about student's music performance, and had a valuable opportunity to interact with the students during intermission.

　Yesterday, I met the lady at the traffic light by chance and I asked her what she worked here in Japan. I was really surprised when she told me that she is a teacher and teaches English at Kuragano Elementary School. And I told her, "When I was in my twenties, I was a teacher of the Japanese school at Calcutta-city in India." She said, "We are in exactly the same position."
