二重唱のような 東洋錦

　寒い早春にあって、約1ヶ月間、目を楽しませてくれた５本の花梅たちは昨日午後の強風で花弁の殆どが散ってしまい寂しい限りで、また、来年です。

　しかし、植物たちはバトンを引き継ぐかのごとく、今度は、シャクナゲが２～３日前より咲き始めてます。今日、ご覧に入れるボケ【木瓜とも書く】は温かい室内で育てたために満開になってます。写真の品種は「東洋錦」です。

　今から、３０年ほど前に２本のボケを庭で育てましたが、花はきれいでも、枝が桑のようにボウボウ伸びてしまい、扱いにくかったです。しかし、花はとても魅力あるので、今では植木鉢で育てています。今度はもっと大きい植木鉢に植え替え、管理しやすい状態で育てます。

　ところで、ボケも早春の訪れを知らせてくれる植物で、原産地は中国といわれ、日本へは平安時代に渡来したようです。鉢植えや生垣、盆栽として人気が高いです。

　成長がとても早く、手入れをしないと人の丈ほどの高さになります。日光の当たる場所で育てると花付きがよいと感じます。それにしても、「源平枝垂れ」同様に、何故、二色で咲くのでしょう。不思議です。音楽における二重唱のようです。
