英語でも答えられる習慣を

　今宵、早めに夕食を終えたので、二階の窓からリコーダーで倉賀野小の校歌を吹いていたら、近くで走って運動していた女子児童たち３人が私の前の道に来て聴いていました。

　このため、私は二階の窓から、英語で「何年生ですか。」と訊いたら、驚いた様子で分からなかったようで、続いて英語で、小学校には「１年生から６年生まであるでしょう。その何番目の学年ですか。」と質問したら、fiveと答えてくれました。

　続いて英語で、「学校で、英語をネイティブの先生に教わっているのですか。」の質問に、１年生から３年生までは男の先生に、４年生以上は女の先生に教わっていると日本語で答えてくれました。

　この時、私は思いました。彼女たちが英語で分からなくても、すぐに日本語で説明せず、こちらが工夫して「分かりやすい英語で説明することこそ大切」ということです。

　今後も、交通指導などで倉賀野小児童とは度々会うので、易しい英語でいろいろ質問してみようと思います。ポイントは子供たちが英語で答えられるように質問することと感じてます。

　From now on, I will meet with Kuragano elementary school students frequently for traffic guidance, etc., so I will try to ask them various questions in basic English. I feel that the point is to ask questions so as to be able to answer in English by children.
