地中では根と根の戦いが起こっている

　今日は予定通り、直植えしてあった芍薬を植木鉢に植え替えました。ご存じの通り、芍薬の根は長芋のようです。直植えしてあったので、掘り返したら「可哀そうな実情がありました。」さて、それは何でしょう。

　それは強いドクダミなど他の植物の根が芍薬の根に絡まってました。これでは栄養が奪われ、芍薬はよく咲けなかったのです。このように地中における根と、他の植物の根との戦いを「ルート・コンペティション」と言うことを、オーストラリア在住のフェイスブック友人・西川さんに教わりました。

　ですから、植木鉢で育てる利点はルート・コンペティションがないことです。植木鉢の中には軽石と共に水捌けのよい土を入れ、油粕を表面に塗し、最後に井戸水をたっぷり与えました。果たして明日の朝、葉が生き生きしているでしょうか。延いては、来年の５月に見事に咲くことを願ってます。

　Today, as planned, I replanted the "Shakuyaku peony" that had been planted on the ground into a flowerpot. As you know, the root of "Shakuyaku peony" is like a yam. It had been planted directly, so when I dug it up, I found a pitiable situation.

　The roots of other plants, such as foul-smelling Dokudami, were entwined with the roots of the Shakuyaku peony. This deprived the nutrients and prevented the Shakuyaku peony from blooming well. I learned from my Facebook friend, Mr. Nishikawa who lives in Australia, that this kind of battle between the roots of other plants in the ground is called a "root competition."

　Therefore, the advantage of raising in a flowerpot is that there is no root competition." I put pumice stone and soil with good drainage in the flowerpot, coated the surface with oil cake, and finally gave it plenty of well water. Will the leaves still be alive tomorrow morning? I hope that it will bloom beautifully in May next year.
