下校指導に従事して感じること

　今日は地元・倉賀野小児童の下校時に手押し信号の所で交通指導しました。可能な限り、こちらから「こんにちは」や「おかえりなさい」と声掛け運動しました。私としては、人間は「言葉で繋がっている」と子供たちに感じてもらいたいからです。

　このため、児童が２～３人で来た場合、私は試しに「英語で何年生ですか?」と質問してみると、やはり、ほとんどの児童は「はてな」という顔をして何も答えません。このため、引き続いて英語で「学校には１年生から６年生までいます。さあ何年生ですか。」と訊くとスリーと答えた子供もいました。

　ところで、この間、数台の車が学校近くまで乗り入れ、我が子だけを車に載せて家に向かう姿が見えました。事情があるにせよ、登下校はなるべく友達と徒歩で登下校させることが、精神的に親から離れ、大切な「独立心や協調性」、「交通ルールを守る」などを培う教育として望ましいと思いました。
