時代を超越した指針「鈴木貫太郎のことば」

　画像は群馬県前橋市の桃井小の校庭に建つ「鈴木貫太郎」の碑です。内容は「正直に　腹を立てずに　撓まず　励め」です。

　国家間の交渉はもちろん、個人としても、「1、嘘をつかないこと。2、どんな状況でも、決して立腹しないこと。3、そして、挫けず、怠け心を抑え、当面の目標を実現するため日々努力せよ。」と、時代を超越し、私たちの行動の在り方や、心の指針を説諭しています。

　桃井小学校では、この碑の内容にメロディーをつけ、偉大な先輩の教えを折に触れ、今でも児童が歌っていると伝えられます。

　鈴木寛太郎は終戦時、日本が国運を決するときの内閣総理大臣です。前述の桃井小学校から前橋中学【現・県立前橋高校】の卒業生で内閣総理大臣になった人です。

　一方、世間にはあまり知られていませんが、鈴木貫太郎の碑は群馬県の赤城山の大沼湖畔の南岸にも建ってます。私は時折、涼しい赤城大沼一周【４K】をウォーキングします。実は、このとき、新たに彼の碑を発見しました。丁度、私が前橋高校に勤務していた時なので、素晴らしい卒業生がいることに改めて驚きました。
