ふたご座流星群について

　北極星側から見ると、現在、宇宙空間の軌道を反時計回りに公転してる私たちの地球は、巨大な「冬のダイアモンド」の方向に進んでます。ですから、今の季節にはよく見えます。特に、昨夜は天候が晴れ上がり、「冬のダイアモンド」の東側に位置する「ふたご座のポルックス」がよく見えました。

　調べてみると、一等星「ボッルクス」の位置は赤緯２８°であり、鹿児島県奄美大島の頭上を通過することから、広く日本列島から良く見えます。

　昨夜、私は何気なく「冬のダイアモンド」を眺めていたところ、夜空を一直線に横切る流れ星が見えました。後で分かったことですが、現在、「ふたご座流星群」が見えると言われており、私が見たのもこの流星だったことになります。

　前述の通り、私たちの地球はその公転軌道【約９億４千万㎞】を【毎秒約29㎞の速度】で１年かけて周遊してることから、時々、宇宙に群を成してる流星に出合います。宇宙空間にある直径数センチメートル程度のチリの粒が、公転中の地球の大気に飛び込んできて大気と激しく衝突し、光を放つ現象と言われてます。

　地球が流星群の位置に差し掛かると、チリの粒がまとめて地球の大気に飛び込んで来ることから、毎年特定の時期に特定の流星群が出現するわけです。今回の流星は「ふたご座流星群」と名付けられてますが、丁度その方角から見えるだけで、考えられないほど遠方にある「ふたご座」とは直接の関係はありません。今宵も「ふたご座流星群」が見えると言われてます。
