中学時代の担任S先生の教えが忘れられない

　Marry in haste, and repent at leisurely.など、ちょっとした「諺」やおもしろい「言い回し」を通じて英単語を覚え、これを使って英作文に応用すると英単語が身につきやすく感じます。

　いったい私たち人間の記憶力とは、どのくらい覚えられるのでしょうか。私のように年齢を重ねても大丈夫でしょうか。

　以前に書きましたが、中学時代に担任であった今は亡きS先生が言われた「人間の脳とは、たくさん入れたつもりでも、実際には未だいくらでも入るスペースがある」との言葉が今でも忘れられません。また、高校時代に一度だけ期末テストで９８点を取ったことがあり、その時、２番手の人が７０点台であったことから英語が好きになりました。人間とは褒められると、そのことがより好きになるようです。

　それ以来、半世紀以上経過した今でも英語の基本中の基本である新たな英単語の記憶に挑戦してます。具体的には「天声人語」の英文対照版を通じて、現代使われてる単語に出合ったり、日々、ＳＮＳを英訳することで「これを英語で何と言うか」という観点に立ってます。これを解決するには本当に便利で有難い「和英辞典」を引くことになります。和英辞典には使える例文が豊富です。私は例文を真似します。

　しかし、覚えてもどんどん忘れます。忘れることを苦にせず、繰り返すことでその言葉に必ず再会します。「繰り返し使ってこそ脳への定着に繋がるようです」。可能であれば、ユーモラスな「諺」や「言い回し」を使うと、より印象づけられやすいです。最初の英文の意味は「急いで結婚、ゆっくり後悔」です。

Also, when I was in senior high school student, I only got a 98 points on a final exam once, and the person who came in second at that time had a score in the 70s, which made me love English. Specifically, through the English comparison version of "Tensei Jingo" from Asahi Newspaper, I have come across words that are used today, and by translating SNS such as Facebook and weblog into English every day, I have been thinking about "How do I interpret this word in English." To solve this problem, I look up a really useful "Japanese-English dictionary". This dictionary has a wealth of example sentences that can be used.

　However, even if I memorize, I forget more and more. Don't worry about forgetting, just repeat the words and we will definitely come across them again. "Repetition seems to lead to our retention." If possible, use humorous proverbs and phrases to make a better impression. The first English sentence means "Marry in a hurry, regret slowly."
