車の安全対策に国境はない

　昨日、愛車Audi TT Quattroの１年点検【購入以来４年経過】を行いました。点検に約１時間半かかるとのことで、ディーラー内で新聞を読んだり、CAさんと雑談して待ってましたが、途中、ちょっと愛車の点検作業を見学したくなり、工場内に行ってみたところ驚きました。

　それは、私の車を点検作業している人が日本人ではありませんでした。すぐに「どちらの国の方ですか」と英語で尋ねたところ、バングラデッシュから来日し、すでに１５年ほど日本でスポーツカーを中心に点検し、この会社では１年半ほど前から働いてます。」とのことで、外国の方に愛車を点検してもらってるとは私には全く予想外の状況でした。

　すぐに彼に「私も２０代のとき、あなたの国に比較的近いインドのカルカッタ市にある日本人学校に勤務してました。」と伝えたところ、彼は目を丸くした驚いてました。私も暫くぶりに、「アップカ・ナーム・キアハイ」(お名前を教えてください。)と、つい、懐かしてヒンズー語が口から出てしまい、彼は更に目を丸くしてました。

　今回、「日本人」が運転する「ドイツ車」を、図らずも「バングラデッシュ人」が点検作業するというグローバルな関係を感じ、国が違っていても「車をいつまでも安全に走らせたいという人間の目標は同じである」と認識を新たにしました。すでにドイツで生産中止となり、日本でも販売終了となったＴＴを「いつまでも大切に乗っていたい気持ち」が私に一層強くなりました。

　This time, I felt the global relationship of having a Bangladeshi person inspect a German car driven by a Japanese person, and I was reminded that even though we are from different countries, the human purpose of keeping cars safe is the same. This situation made me feel even more strongly that I wanted to keep driving this TT Quattro for as long as possible, because The TT has already been discontinued in Germany and is no longer on sale in Japan.
