今宵は「七夕」ではありません。

　メディアなどで「今宵は七夕です。」と言うことがありますが、今宵は決して「七夕」ではありません。天文学的に、七夕は旧暦の７月７日の晩です。

　先ず、七夕とは、星ではなく【月の満ち欠けが七日目の夕方】ということです。今宵の月の満ち欠けは２日目であり、7日目ではありません。「夏の大三角形」に属する一等星・織姫星【琴座のベガ】と一等星・彦星【わし座のアルタイル】は今の季節では東の空に低いため、見ることは難しいです。見えてもすごく低い位置です。しかも、毎年、この時季は梅雨の終盤であり、二つの星を含む「夏の大三角」は８月中旬になってこそ日本列島の上空に広がります。

　常に、天の川に隔てられている織姫星【ベガ】と彦星【アルタイル】が日本列島の上空に差し掛かり、しかも、二人が天の川で出会うには小舟が必要です。その役割を果たすのが、西南の空に浮かび小舟の形になる「七日目の月」です。この三者が揃うタイミングは１年に一度のみです。そのチャンスが訪れるのは今年・令和６年では、現行歴の「８月１０日の晩」です。

　太陰太陽暦から現行の太陽暦に変わった明治５年からすでに１５０年以上経過しても、「七夕は７月７日」と数字だけで単純に引き継がれたことが大きな間違いになってます。

　今でもメディアや学校で「今日は七夕」と子供たちに伝えがちですが、このままでは、今後も日本では誤った天文知識を子供たちに伝えていくことになり、正しさこそ重要な教育上の観点から「単純に７月7日が七夕と教えることは全くの間違いであり」大いに危惧されます。七夕は太陰太陽暦の７月７日の晩で、７日目の月が西南の空に出る晩です。

　You may hear "Tonight is Tanabata" that means Vega festival in the media, but tonight is definitely not "Tanabata". Astronomically, Tanabata is the evening of July 7th on the lunar calendar.

　First of all, Tanabata is [not the stars, but the moon's phase is the evening of the seventh day of the waxing moon]. Tonight's moon is on the second day, not the seventh. The first magnitude star of Vega in Lyra and Altair in Aquila in the the "Summer Triangle", are low in the eastern sky at this season of the year, so that they are difficult to see. Even if you can see them, they are very low in the eastern sky. Moreover, this time of year is the end of the rainy season every year in Japan, and the "Summer Triangle" containing these two stars does not spread out over the Japanese archipelago until mid-August.

　The two stars Vega and Altair, who are separated by the Milky Way, are always passing over the Japanese archipelago, and if they meet, a small boat is needed for them to meet on the Milky Way. The role of this is played by the "seventh phase of the moon" which appears in the southwestern sky and takes the shape of a small boat. These three come together only once a year. This year, Reiwa 6, 2024 this opportunity comes on the evening of August 10th in the current solar calendar.

　Even though more than 150 years have passed since the lunisolar calendar was changed to the current solar calendar in Meiji 5, 1872 it is a big mistake to have simply used on the number "Tanabata is July 7th".

　Even now, the media and schools tend to tell children "Today is Tanabata", but if this continues, incorrect astronomical knowledge will continue to children in Japan, and from the perspective of education, where accuracy is important, it is a great concern that "it is completely wrong to simply teach that July 7th is Tanabata". Tanabata falls on the evening of the seventh day of the July of the lunar calendar, and the night when the seventh phase of moon rises in the southwestern sky.
