鳩を飼っていた「思い出」ぼろぼろ

　私が子供の頃、多くの少年は鳩を飼ってました。私も小学4年から飼い始め、結局、退職後まで半世紀以上の長きに亘り鳩を飼い、高崎市の連合会に所属し、鳩レースを楽しみました。その間、東北地方からや、北海道からのレースに連合会で数回優勝。特に、雨の中、連盟１羽帰りした９００Ｋレースや、日本の最北端・稚内市から１０００K以上の距離を帰還した「稚内モザイク号」は思い出深い鳩です。

　また、勤務してた学校の運動会やマラソン大会の開会式で鳩をたくさん飛ばし、歓声が上がったことも思い出です。長く飼っているといろいろのことがあり、イギリスが世界中に発行してるレース鳩月刊誌「ビクトリア」の表紙を飾ったことが３回あり嬉しかったです。今でも玄関に飾ってあります。この月刊誌には当時鳩を飼育してたエリザベス女王も時々登場したので、彼女は私の記事を読んでくださった可能性があります。
　
　最も深い思い出は、私が飼っていた１羽の鳩が迷って中国内モンゴルまで飛んで行ってしまい、鳩を手にした中国の方から「鳩はあなたに会いたがってます」と先方から手紙を戴き、私は一人で内モンゴルまで行って、その鳩(中日友好号)と再会し、内モンゴルの方々とパオの中で日中友好をしてきた楽しい思い出もあります。パオの中にオルガンがあったので私が中国国歌を弾いたら、そこにいた人たち全員から手拍子を戴きました。

　近年では、群馬県に住んでることから、御巣鷹山の現場へは３回慰霊登山をしました。最後のお参りでは１０羽の鳩を籠に詰め、麓の駐車場から鳩の入った重たい籠を持ち、休み休みして１時間ほどしてやっとのことで「昇魂之碑」に着きました。

　常に現場を管理してる地元の黒沢さん(写真左の方)曰く、「ここで犠牲となった５２０名のご冥福を祈り、鳩を飛ばした人はあなただけです。」と言われ、苦労して高い位置まで鳩を運んで良かったと思いました。飛ばした鳩たちは標高のある「御巣鷹の尾根」から埼玉県の方に向かい、その日には１羽も倉賀野に帰らず、翌日、埼玉県の方から我が家に全部帰って来ました。

　I also remember flying pigeons at the sports day and opening ceremony of the marathon at the school where I worked, and receiving cheers from the crowd. Many things happen when I kept pigeons for a long time, and I was happy to appear on the cover of Pictorial, a monthly racing pigeon magazine published worldwide by the UK, three times. I still have one hanging in the entrance of my house. Queen Elizabeth, who kept pigeons at the time, sometimes appeared in this monthly magazine, so it's possible that she read my articles.

　My deepest memory is when one of my pigeons strayed and flew all the way to Inner Mongolia, China, and I received a letter from a Chinese person who had picked up my pigeon saying, "The pigeon wants to meet you." I went to Inner Mongolia by myself to reunite with the pigeon (the China-Japan Friendship pigeon), and had a fun time for friendship between Japan and China in the pao tent with the people of Inner Mongolia. There was an organ in the pao, so I played the Chinese national anthem, as the result, everyone there clapped along.

　In recent years, since I live in Gumma Prefecture, I have made three memorial climbs to the site of Mount Osutaka where JAL clashed site. For my final visit, I stuffed 10 pigeons into a cage, and after carrying the heavy cage from the parking lot at the foot of the mountain, taking breaks along the way, I finally arrived at the "Shokon-no-hi" monument after about an hour.

　Mr. Kurosawa (left in the photo), a local who always manages the site, told me, "You are the only one who has released pigeons here to pray for the repose of the souls of 520 people who lost their lives." I felt glad that I had carried the pigeons up to such a high altitude. The pigeons that I released headed towards Saitama Prefecture from the high "Osutaka Ridge," but they didn't returned to Kuragano that day. The next day, they all returned to my loft from Saitama Prefecture.
