群馬の英語表現はGunmaでなくGummaに

 　群馬を英語で書き表すと、何の躊躇いもなくGunmaと表現することが公にも使用されてます。しかし、この文字を英語圏の外国人が一見すると、実は、恐ろしいテロリストを意味するGunmanに酷似し、連想してしまいます。しかも、外国人の多くはGunmaの綴りではグンマとは発音せず、どうしてもガヌマと発音しがちです。

　ところで、群馬県を総合的に指導管轄する立場にある群馬県庁でさえ、その入り口には未だに、GUNMA PREFECTUAL GOVERNMENT OFFICEと表示されてることに驚きます。今では県庁に海外からの公的な来客も多いことから、来客は遠路はるばる県庁の入り口に到着するや否や「ドキッと」するかもしれません。

　実は、この原因は今の大人が小学生時代に習ったローマ字学習に起因し、２１世紀になっても、その習慣から抜け切れず、英語で表現すべきところをローマ字で書いてしまう欠点が未だ尾を引いています。一刻も早く英語表現に近いGummaに修正すべきです。私たちが群馬と言うとき「ん」は必ず唇が閉じてることから、nでなく、mが正しいです。

　その点、感心するのは海外からの客が多い群馬ロイヤルホテルの入り口には、以前よりGumma Royal Hotelと表示され、先進的で素晴らしく思います。また、ＪＲ群馬藤岡駅では、その入り口にGumma-Fujioka-Stationと表示されており、海外の来客に対して、素晴らしいもてなしです。ですから国際交流に力を入れてる県庁よりＪＲの方が２１世紀に相応しい先進的な役目を果たしてます。

　ご存知の通り、フェイスブックやブログは瞬時に世界と繋がってることから、内容は拙いですが、私はフェイスブックやブログでは群馬をGummaと表現してます。

Moreover, many foreigners do not pronounce as Gumma, but tend to pronounce it as about Ganuma.

　By the way, even the Gumma Prefectural Office, which is in a position to comprehensively supervise and govern Gumma Prefecture, is still surprised to see that it is still marked as GUNMA PREFECTUAL GOVERNMENT OFFICE at its entrance. Nowadays, the prefectural office is visited by many official visitors from overseas, so that the visitors may be startled as soon as they arrive at the entrance of the prefectural office after traveling a long way.

　In fact, the reason for this is due to the Roman alphabet that adults learned in elementary school period, and even in the 21st century, they can't to break away from this habit, so the fatal flaw of writing that should be expressed in English, they tend to linger to write in Roman alphabet still now. They should correct it to Gumma, which is closer to English expression, as soon as possible. When we say Gumma, the "n" is always pronounced with our lips closed, so m is the correct word, not n.

　What I'm impressed with in this regard is that the entrance to Gumma Royal Hotel, which receives many international guests, has had a sign writing "Gumma Royal Hotel" since several decades, which I think is advanced and wonderful. Also, at the entrance to Fujioka Station on the JR lines, "Gumma-Fujioka-Station" is now displayed, which is a wonderful hospitality to international visitors. So, JR is more advanced role in the 21st century than the prefectural government, which is focusing on international exchange.
