子供たちには最初から「和英辞典」を持たせたい

　日本では、英語教育にずいぶん力を入れてます。ところが、振り返ると、私の場合も「試験が終わると覚えたことを忘れてしまいました。」試験のために勉強してたのです。多くの人は学校を卒業しても、特別な人を除いて英語での対応は難しい現実があります。

　それには根本的な理由があり、日本は歴史的に見て、何百年もの期間、外国に支配されていたことがありませんでした。また、地理的にも島国のため、私たちの先祖は他国の人と交流する必要がなかったのです。特にヨーロッパ人など諸外国と異なり、私たちの祖先は英語を話さなくても「日本語だけで不自由なく生活できていた」ことが遠因してます。その血統が私たちに流れています。もちろん。これは誠に素晴らしいことで、国語教育の成果でもあります。

　私の場合も、英語は机の上の勉強になってました。つまり、生活として英語に浸かってませんでした。先日、中学生に訊いたら「英語の辞書を持っていない」と言うのには本当に驚きました。今後、学校で薦めるても、おそらく「英和辞典」でしょう。子供たちが従来より英語脳になるには、むしろ最初から「和英辞典」を持たせるべきだと考えます。もちろん「英和辞典」は必携です。

　子供たちが自らの考えや、ある事象に感想を持ち「この事を英語で何というか？」という観点に立ったとき、疑問にすぐ答えてくれるのが「和英辞典」です。しかも、現在の和英辞典は例文が豊富で、平素の会話に応用できます。発音記号も掲載されてます。

　将来、学校では英語の時間以外に、体育の授業を英語のみで行えば、文字から離れた英語となり、何と言っても「動きが伴うことから」子供の英語能力は抜群に伸びるでしょう。私たちが日本語を話すのは、生まれて以来「動きと言葉が一体だったから」と考えます。

工夫こそ人間の知恵・・・猛暑を乗り切りましょう

　平地は連日３８°C前後の猛暑ですが、私の家の三階の窓から見える活火山・浅間山の標高は２５６８mですから、山頂の気温は推定１５°C前後と想われます。気温は１００m高くなるごとに１°C下がるからです。ですから、山頂は現在かなり涼しいでしょう。

　今までに群馬県側から２回、長野県側から１回頂上に登った私は、地獄のように深い火口の底から噴出してる煙や、それとは対照的に富士山や北アルプスをはじめ、四方に広がるの山々の景色、関東平野の広大な平原と、そこに流れる利根川の蛇行を今でも鮮明に覚えてます。青春時代の記憶は色褪せないものです。

　ところで、夏に高山に昇るのも涼しい工夫ですが、日々の生活でも、私たちはちょっとした「工夫により」涼しくなることがあります。今朝の公園でのラジオ体操会は全員で日陰で行ったところ、いつもとは全く異なる涼しさを感じました。実は、木影では涼しい風が吹いてるのです。

　同様に涼しくなる工夫はまだあります。水やビールを飲むコップを平素から冷蔵庫で冷やしておくと驚くほど冷たくて美味しいです。毎日の猛暑ではこまめな水分補給が鉄則です。冷たいコップで飲むと生き返るようです。一方、庭は広い木陰にしてあり、その下で身体を時々動かします。工夫して暑い夏を乗り切りましょう。

周囲を明るくするハイビスカス・・・見習いたい

　紅白２種類のハイビスカスがいっしょに咲いてます。蕾がそれぞれ未だ１０個ほどあり、花の少ない今の時季でも暫くは楽しめそうです。花の直径は１０cmほどで、遠くからも目立ちます。

　ところで、笑顔には連鎖的なことが起こります。現役のとき、研修合宿で行われた小さな音楽発表会でのこと。私が演奏していたら、どうしたことか観客の一人が急に笑ったのです。そしたら、演奏してた私も何故か笑ってしまい、会場全体があちこちで笑い始め、それが、次のプログラムになっても、まだ笑う人が出て、会場全体がどうにも笑いが止まらぬ事態になってしまいました。あの笑いの連鎖はどうして起こったのか今でも分かりません。不思議なことです。

　私は子供のときからレース鳩を最近まで飼育し、日本犬も飼ってました。ところが、これらの動物は笑ったことが一度もありません。笑うという行動は私たち人間だけの特権です。果たして今日も笑いのある一日でしょうか。

春が来た 人も車も 調子が肝心

　先日のシルバー川柳に「冬の日の　一番風呂は　命がけ」という本人にとっては命を懸けた笑えないものがありました通り、私も一年中、一番風呂ですから、他人事ではありません。
