南極で金環食か・・・２月１７日の春節に

　体感としては今日が最も寒い一日に感じました。それでも、夕方４時頃より用事があったので２Kほど歩きました。ただ歩くより目的地があると、早く着きたい一心で、ストライドを広げたウォーキングになります。

　帰宅する頃には、満月に近い１１日目の「上弦の月」が出ており、西高東低の気圧配置であることから、空気が澄み、現在も明るく輝いてます。この月の下で一際、明るく輝いてる星は木星です。現在の木星は、地球を挟んで太陽と反対の位置にあることから満月のような状況にあり、光度を増してます。この月と木星を囲んでる６個の一等星たちが「冬のダイアモンド」です。月明かりでちょっと見難いでしょう。

　次回の新月は２月１７日です。この日は中国などで「春節」です。つまり旧暦の正月です。尚、この日、南極では「金環食」が起こると言われてます。現在の南極は夜がなく、毎日が昼間なので、神秘的な太陽をよく観察できるでしょう。

　Today I felt like the coldest day in this winter. I had some business around 4pm, so I walked about 2km. Having a destination rather than just walking, I increased my stride to get there quickly.

　By the time I got home, the waxing moon which is almost full on the 11th night, had appeared. The high pressure in the west and low pressure in the east tends to clear sky, so that the moon was still shining brightly. The brightest plant shining beneath the moon is Jupiter. Currently, Jupiter shines brightly because it's located opposite the Sun. The six first-magnitude stars are surrounding the moon and Jupiter. These stars make up the famous "Winter Diamond." It may be a little difficult to see by the moonlight.

　By the way, the next new moon will be February 17th. As you know, this is the Chinese New Year in China and elsewhere, which means the New Year according to the lunar calendar. It's said that an annular eclipse of the sun will occur in Antarctica on this day. Since there is no night in Antarctica right now, and it's daytime continues every day, therefore people there you'll be able to get a good look at the mysterious sun.

　只今、西南の空に月面の山やクレーターが見える上弦の月が出てます。今日は旧暦の９月８日ですから、月齢８です。このまま明るい部分が日に日に大きくなり、満月は１１月４日です。画像を拡大すると月面が良く見えます。

　ところで、月面から地球を眺めてみたいものです。そうだ、今宵、夢で一緒に見ましょう。

　In Japan, a waxing moon is shining in the southwestern sky right now, with mountains and craters visible on its surface. As you know, today is September 8th on the lunar calendar, so the moon is eight days old. 月と地球の満ち欠けは左右が反対

　現在、月面から地球を見るとこのように見えてます。地球から見る月は現在下弦の月ですから、丁度、反対側が光っています。深夜2時頃には東の空に出るので、晴れてれば確認できます。

日本付近が月面に映し出されてるかも

　９月８日、午前４時２０分の月【左】と４時４５分頃の月【右】です。誠に珍しい月の姿です。西の空に左上が明るいことは通常の満ち欠けでは起こり得ない月の姿です。

　恰も下弦の月のようです。通常このような欠け方をするときは「日の出前の東の空で左下」が光のます。これは皆既月食が終盤となり、再度、満月に太陽光が当たっている姿です。

　それにしても、日の出前の地球の地平線が、月にはっきり映し出されてます。時間的に考慮すると、日本付近の地平線あるいは水平線が月に写し出されていると考えられます。故に、こんな姿の月を見るのは生涯に一度でしょう。

　The moon at 4:20am on September 8th [top] and around 4:45am [bottom]. This is a very unusual appearance of the moon. The upper left being bright in the western sky is an appearance that would not occur during the normal waxing and waning of the moon.

　It looks just like a waning moon. But, normally, when the moon wanes like this, the lower left is shining in the eastern sky before sunrise. This is the end of a total lunar eclipse, with sunlight shining on the full moon once again.

　Even so, the Earth's horizon before sunrise is clearly reflected on the moon surface. Considering the time, it is thought that this horizon or horizontal line projected on the moon surface is near Japan. Therefore, seeing the moon looking like this is probably a once in a lifetime for me.

未明に起こる皆既月食

【時間は上より、欠け始めの８日午前１時１７分、２時３７分、１時４７分、１時５７分、２時１７分】

　今宵は月齢１５なので満月です。幸運にも「深夜に月食が起こります。」８日の未明の皆既月食です。

　国立天文台によると、８日午前1時27分頃から「南西の空に浮かぶ満月」が地球の影に入り、月食が始まります。

　今回は月が南西に傾いてるので、月の上の部分から欠けていくと私カッキーは推測します。果たしてどうでしょう。約１時間で皆既月食です。いっしょに見たいものです。

　As you noticed, tonight is a full moon, as the lunar phase is 15. Fortunately, a lunar eclipse will occur during the late night. It will be a total lunar eclipse, starting in the early morning of the 8th.

　According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the full moon, appearing in the southwestern sky, will begin to enter Earth's shadow around 1:27 AM on the 8th, marking the start of the eclipse.

　Since, this time, the moon will be positioned towards the southwest, I who is Kakky, predict that the eclipse will begin with the upper part of the moon being obscured. Let's see if that's true. 今宵は十五夜

　今日は現行暦【太陽暦】で９月６日です。しかし、太陰太陽暦【旧暦】では７月１５日ですから今宵は十五夜です。ところが、十五夜は必ずしも満月ではありません。江戸時代以前から明治５年までは今日が「お盆で」あり、夕方、墓参りに行くとき、東の空に都合よく十五夜の月が出たのでしょう。このように、電気のない昔の生活は「月と密接に結びついていた」と考えられます。

　今回、日本列島東岸を襲った台風１５号では物凄い竜巻が生じ、車が宙に浮いたり、民家の屋根が吹き飛ぶなど驚くほど大きな被害をニュースは伝えてます。おそらく、上空が一時的に真空状態に近くなるのでしょう。一方、台風が去った今朝は空気が入れ替わり、澄んだ秋の空の下、公園でラジオ体操を行いました。スズムシ、コオロギなど虫の音に一段と季節の移り変わりを感じます。

　前述の通り、今宵は十五夜です。でも、月齢は１４です。専門家の計算によると、今回は9月7日の夕方に昇る満月が深夜過ぎ【８日未明】になると暫くぶりの「月食」です。

　ご存じの通り、この現象は、私たちを載せてる地球の影は常に宇宙空間にありますが、月が太陽とは反対の位置に来た時、つまり、満月の晩のみに起こり、月は「地球の周りを反時計回りに公転してる」ことから、月が欠け始めるのは月面の左側からです。これは月が地球の影に右方向から入るからです。

　Today is September 6th according to the Solar calendar. However, according to the lunisolar calendar (old calendar), it is the 15th of July, which means tonight is the 15th moon. However, the 15th moon does not always coincide with a full moon. For this reason, before the Edo period until 1872 (Meiji 5), today was considered "O-Bon" (a Buddhist festival), and when people went to visit their ancestors' graves in the evening, the full moon would conveniently appear in the eastern sky. 　As you know, this phenomenon occurs only on full moon nights, when the moon is on the opposite side of the sun. Since the Earth casts a shadow in space, and the moon orbits the Earth counterclockwise, therefore, the eclipse begins on the left side of the moon seen in the Northern Hemisphere. This is because the moon enters the Earth's shadow from the right side.

微かに地球照が見える

　今宵、午後８時前に、私の家の三階の窓から西の空に沈む直前の「三日月」を撮りました。今日は旧暦【太陰太陽暦】で６月３日です。月が沈む位置は浅間山のすぐ南です。

　この写真をクリックし拡大すると、薄く月の全体像が映ってます。これは「地球照」というもので、おそらくインド洋やアフリカ大陸を照らしてる太陽の光が、逆に月面を照らしているものと想われます。

　Tonight, just before 8pm Japan time, I took this photo of the crescent moon just before it set in the western sky from the third-floor window of my house. Today is June 3rd in the lunar calendar (lunisolar calendar). The moon sets just south of the active volcano Mt. Asama.

　If you enlarge this photo, you can see a faint image of the entire moon in the left side. This is called "earthshine", and I think it is probably the sunlight shining on the Indian Ocean or on the African continent which is then illuminating the surface of the moon.

私も肖りたい

　本当の七夕の晩【今年は８月２９日】の月は西南の空にこんな形で浮いてます。お椀の舟の形です。これが月齢「七」の「夕」方の月です。

　中国の伝説ではこの舟に織姫星【琴座のベガ】と彦星【わし座のアルタイル】が乗って天の川で年に一度のデートです。私も肖りたいです。

　On the night of the actual Tanabata Vega festival (August 29th this year), the moon floats in the southwestern sky like this photo. The moon will be shaped like a bowl-shaped boat. This is the moon in the "evening" phased of the seventh.

　In Chinese legend, Vega in Lyra, and Altair in Aquila, ride in this boat together for their annual date across the Milky Way. I wish I were as lucky as them.

久しぶりに見えた！・・・赤味を帯びた月

　只今、気づきましたが、南東の地平線近くに１７日目の下弦の月が出ています。ご覧の通り、かなり赤味がかかってます。画像を拡大すると月面がよく見えるでしょう。

　私たちを載せた地球も、この光景と同じで暗黒の宇宙にぽっかり浮いてます。明るい所が昼であり、欠けたところが日没です。裏は夜です。

　今回のように、地平線近くに月があるときは、月からの光が地球上の厚い大気の中を通過することになり、青い光は届きにくく、赤い光だけが私達の目に届きます。おやすみなさい。

　I've just noticed that the 17th day waning moon is appearing near the southeastern horizon. As you can see, it has a very reddish tinge. If you enlarge the image, you can see the lunar surface better.

　If we see our earth from a remote space, it is just like this scene, floating in the dark of universe. The bright areas are day, and the crescent areas are sunset. The other side is night.

　As it is now, when the Moon is near the horizon, the light from the Moon passes through the thick atmosphere above the Earth, making it difficult for blue light to reach us, and only red light reaches our eyes. Have a nice dream tonight!

予想より、大分離れてましたね。

　暗くなったら、ランデブーは見えましたが、私の予想より互いに大分離れてますね。明日の晩は月が約１２°東に移動するので、今宵より近づくでしょう。しかし、月が金星の下になりそうな気配です。

　一方、地球照ははっきり見えてますね。これは地球上でも満月の晩は月明かりがあるのと同じ現象と考えられます。

　When it got dark, the rendezvous was visible, but they are much farther apart than I expected. Tomorrow night, the Moon will move about 12° east, so it will be closer than tonight. However, it looks like that the Moon may be below Venus.

　On the other hand, the earthshine is clearly visible now. This can be thought of as the same phenomenon as the moonlight on Earth when there is a full moon.
