群馬の英語表現はGunmaでなくGummaに

 　群馬を英語で書き表すと、何の躊躇いもなくGunmaと表現することが公にも使用されてます。しかし、この文字を英語圏の外国人が一見すると、実は、恐ろしいテロリストを意味するGunmanに酷似し、連想してしまいます。しかも、外国人の多くはGunmaの綴りではグンマとは発音せず、どうしてもガヌマと発音しがちです。

　ところで、群馬県を総合的に指導管轄する立場にある群馬県庁でさえ、その入り口には未だに、GUNMA PREFECTUAL GOVERNMENT OFFICEと表示されてることに驚きます。今では県庁に海外からの公的な来客も多いことから、来客は遠路はるばる県庁の入り口に到着するや否や「ドキッと」するかもしれません。

　実は、この原因は今の大人が小学生時代に習ったローマ字学習に起因し、２１世紀になっても、その習慣から抜け切れず、英語で表現すべきところをローマ字で書いてしまう欠点が未だ尾を引いています。一刻も早く英語表現に近いGummaに修正すべきです。私たちが群馬と言うとき「ん」は必ず唇が閉じてることから、nでなく、mが正しいです。

　その点、感心するのは海外からの客が多い群馬ロイヤルホテルの入り口には、以前よりGumma Royal Hotelと表示され、先進的で素晴らしく思います。また、ＪＲ群馬藤岡駅では、その入り口にGumma-Fujioka-Stationと表示されており、海外の来客に対して、素晴らしいもてなしです。ですから国際交流に力を入れてる県庁よりＪＲの方が２１世紀に相応しい先進的な役目を果たしてます。

　ご存知の通り、フェイスブックやブログは瞬時に世界と繋がってることから、内容は拙いですが、私はフェイスブックやブログでは群馬をGummaと表現してます。

未来ある子供を大切にする社会に

　毎朝、倉賀野上4公園でのラジオ体操会に参加し、楽しいことの一つは大きな秋田犬が散歩の途中に必ず会場に立ち寄り、ラジオ体操仲間一人一人から「かんちゃん」と声を掛けられ、頭をなでられ交流してることです。ラジオ体操のメンバーは比較的高齢の方が多く、子供も時々参加してます。どちらかと言えば、私たちがこの秋田犬に癒されてる面があり、お陰で、皆にこにこしながら朝の楽しいひと時を味わってます。写真はラジオ体操会場に咲く日日草です。

　一日が始まる朝から楽しいこと、笑いがあることは人間の精神面と健康面にプラスになるでしょう。その後、一斉にラジオ体操が始まります。会場への行き帰りの歩きを含めると毎朝３０分程の運動となり、結果的に空腹となり、朝食が美味しいことに繋がってます。このためでしょうか。ラジオ体操に来なくなる人は殆どいません。一人ではなく仲間と楽しいこと、そして、お腹が空くことは健康維持の基本と考えられます。

　ところで別件ですが、ニュースによると、ロシアの侵攻により戦火にあるウクライナから日本に避難してる家族の子供たちが、実は、言葉の面で日本の学校や社会に馴染めず、やむを得ず、再度、戦火のウクライナへ帰国を余儀なくされてると伝えられてます。

　寂しい思いをしてるこれらの子供たちに私たちは温かく接し、精神面で支援してやらなければなりません。彼らにとって、特に日本語が最も異質に聞こえ、文字も全く異質に見え、朝から晩まで、ちんぷんかんぷんに聞こえる日々なのでしょう。私たちは交流面においても、言葉の面でもウクライナの子供たちに温かな手を差し伸べなくてはなりません。

北京駅から内モンゴル間の長距離列車内で流れていた「北国の春」

　今日は先程、お気に入り喫茶「さんぽ道」に行って、涼しさと静寂さの雰囲気の中でアイスコーヒーを味わってきました。夕方だったのでママさんとスタッフさんのみでした。そのため、お二人に聴いてもらうため１５分程ピアノで数曲弾かせてもらいました。

　一曲は「北国の春」。実はこの曲は私にとって思い出深い曲なのです。日本の曲ですが、どうしたことでしょう、中国で凄く人気のある曲でした。

　私は平成時代に、北京駅から長距離列車で１１時間かけて内モンゴルの集寧(チーニン)に行ったことがあります。目的は私の家で生まれた鳩が間違って内モンゴルまで飛んで行ってしまったからです。先方からの手紙でそのことが分かりました。ですから、その鳩【中日友好号】に会いに行ったのです。内モンゴルの方が私の鳩と確認できたのは、鳩の足に付けてあった私の住所からです。

　その時、大陸横断鉄道の列車の中で流れていた音楽が「北国の春」でした。そんなことで、当時を思い出しながら今日はピアノを弾きました。この曲は「ファとシ」がなく、それでも主音は「ド」ですから、中国の方に好まれるのでしょう。

車の安全対策に国境はない

　昨日、愛車Audi TT Quattroの１年点検【購入以来４年経過】を行いました。点検に約１時間半かかるとのことで、ディーラー内で新聞を読んだり、CAさんと雑談して待ってましたが、途中、ちょっと愛車の点検作業を見学したくなり、工場内に行ってみたところ驚きました。

　それは、私の車を点検作業している人が日本人ではありませんでした。すぐに「どちらの国の方ですか」と英語で尋ねたところ、バングラデッシュから来日し、すでに１５年ほど日本でスポーツカーを中心に点検し、この会社では１年半ほど前から働いてます。」とのことで、外国の方に愛車を点検してもらってるとは私には全く予想外の状況でした。

　すぐに彼に「私も２０代のとき、あなたの国に比較的近いインドのカルカッタ市にある日本人学校に勤務してました。」と伝えたところ、彼は目を丸くした驚いてました。私も暫くぶりに、「アップカ・ナーム・キアハイ」(お名前を教えてください。)と、つい、懐かしてヒンズー語が口から出てしまい、彼は更に目を丸くしてました。

　今回、「日本人」が運転する「ドイツ車」を、図らずも「バングラデッシュ人」が点検作業するというグローバルな関係を感じ、国が違っていても「車をいつまでも安全に走らせたいという人間の目標は同じである」と認識を新たにしました。すでにドイツで生産中止となり、日本でも販売終了となったＴＴを「いつまでも大切に乗っていたい気持ち」が私に一層強くなりました。

インドの会に出席

【この絵はインド滞在中、私が描いたカルカッタ市にあるビクトリア記念館です。後年、次女はこの絵の実物を見に行きました。】

　今日１１月１１日は、第一次世界大戦が終わった日であることから「世界平和の日」です。また、１が並ぶことから「介護の日」であり、更に、「独身の日」であり、１１人対１１人で「サッカーの日」です。

　ところで、昨日は最初の就職で勤務したインド・カルカッタ日本人学校時代の職員の会が開かれました。心はすぐに当時の日本人学校に戻り、話題は南国の日々を暮らした青春時代に花が咲きました。

　真剣に行なった授業研究会の晩はモキャンボというレストランで生演奏を聴きつつ、インド料理とビールを楽しんだこと、職場にいたインド人職員たちのこと、住まいであった日本総領事館内の宿舎のこと、ネパールで見た高くて長い万年雪のヒマラヤ山脈に感動したこと、また、当時の生徒さんが現在、世界で活躍してることなどに話が及び、話題は尽きませんでした。

　出席者は年齢だけは増しましたが、皆、当時と同じで、お元気で何よりで、再会を期し、充実した楽しいインドの会でした。

　私としては、カルカッタシンフォニーの演奏会を聴いた後、常任のユダヤ人指揮者バーナードヤコブ氏に会い、指揮法のレッスンをお願いし、以後ずっと教わっていたことが懐かしいです。これは帰国後、群馬の高校で吹奏楽を指揮する気持ちが強かったからです。

暫くぶりに アメリカ女性と 会話する

　地元・倉賀野小の児童の安全を期して、昨日は下校時に交通パトロールをしました。多くの場合、気候は寒いか暑いかのどちらかですが、昨日は５月の陽気となり快適でした。

　何と、珍しく外国の女性です。彼女が信号待ちしてるとき、間髪入れず、私は「どちらの国から見えましたか。」と尋ねたら、「アメリカのバージニア州から来ました。」とのことで、私もアメリカの女性と話すのは暫くぶりでした。

　現役時代は４回、ホームステイとして我が家に１週間ほどアメリカ人を受け入れ、食事を共にしたり、群馬県内や軽井沢を案内したことがあります。また、草津における前高吹奏楽部の合宿に同行してもらい、演奏について感想を述べて戴いたり、部員との交流の機会を持ち、部員たちも本場の英語に接して大変有意義でした。

　昨日、信号の所で偶然お会いした女性に「お仕事は何をされてますか」との私の問いに、何と「教師をしており、倉賀野小で英語を教えてる」とのことで私は本当に驚きました。私も「２０代のときインドの日本人学校で教師をしてました」と話すと、彼女は「ちょうど同じ立場ですね」と驚いた様子でした。

ステージに 登場したような 紅梅枝垂れ

今朝はサッカーに燃えましたね。

　１２月になって、朝晩は本格的に寒くなってきました。日本海側や東北地方及び北海道では降雪と伝えられ、寒さは私の住む群馬とは比較にならないでしょう。そんな私も１８年も一人で生活してると、年を重ね、心身ともに寒さが沁みます。

　ところで、室外にあった君子蘭を一週間前に日の当たる廊下に入れたところ、日本サッカーの勝利を喜ぶかの如く、今朝、咲いてるではありませんか。本来ならば３月に咲くわけで、これは狂い咲きでしょうか、それとも本格的な開花でしょうか。判断できませんが、ご覧の通り、下の方にも別の蕾が生まれてます。

　１２月は一年のまとめの時期です。今日を含め、今年は後３０日です。どんな厳しい環境にあっても「昨日より今日」と少しでも海馬を刺激し、年齢と共に、頑なになりがちな心をできる限り柔軟にしたいと思います。
